Internet socket is the last computer network point to connect to the end device. For connection, use the patchcord cable appropriate for the given internet socket . The most common plug-to-socket connection in structural computer networks is RJ45 .

Internet sockets - types

Division of internet sockets of the structural network due to the structure:

  • single internet sockets
  • double internet sockets
  • surface and flush-mounted internet sockets
  • integrated subscriber points - network subscriber sockets + 220V sockets + dedicated 220V sockets (most often red sockets, secured with a key, connected to UPS and power generators. Only equipment that requires continuous operation are connected to them )

  • RJ45 shielded copper cable subscriber sockets, cat.5e, 6, 6A, 7, 7A

Subscriber outlets - what can be put in them

Connectors of various technologies and standards can be inserted into internet sockets. In addition to the connectors traditionally used in computer networks, subscriber sockets can accommodate USB, HDMI and coaxial connectors of many types. Network sockets also have the option of placing the module in a specific standard. The most commonly used standard is keystone jack . 80x80mm subscriber sockets are also used quite often. Adapters are available for mounting 1 or 2 keystone modules in one 80x80mm field.

RJ45 sockets are one of the more complicated connections. Especially for categories 5 and above, it is necessary to make a keystone module or a socket with a special integrated function. In ready ethernet sockets or in standard modules, the installer connects the cable on one side, and on the other, we can connect a patch cord with RJ45 termination. Good quality sockets guarantee about 1000 cycles.

Internet sockets - precision guarantees speed and reliability

Network transmission standards are constantly being improved. This requires more and more precision both during installation and in the design and production of the sockets themselves. The installer must ensure that changes in the arrangement of cables are as small as possible so as to compensate the influence of electromagnetic fields between the pairs along the entire length of the cable. In the subscriber socket itself, the signal transition between the RJ45 socket and the installer connection cannot be a simple wired connection. Most often these are printed circuit boards designed in such a way as to most effectively compensate for interference. The RJ45 socket itself is slightly modified due to the limitations of the standard, however, starting from category 6, some changes in the arrangement of the contacts can be noticed. In the plug itself, the cable routing has been changed from one to two levels.

Types of network sockets

Network subscriber sockets like most other sockets available on the market are produced in many variants. The cheapest and most common solution is ready ethernet socket with specific parameters. It is convenient to install, has a small size. Such sockets can be purchased both in the surface-mounted and flush-mounted versions.

All classes and categories are available in both shielded and unshielded versions. Flush-mounted sockets are installed in standard electrical boxes. It is also possible to mount these sockets on electrical installation channels. Sockets mounted on the basis of standard modules give much larger configurations.

With the help of keystone jack modules we can equip surface-mounted outlets , flush-mounted, sets sockets in floor boxes as well as large surface-mounted or flush-mounted sets containing many different modules, standard and dedicated power supply. If we want to use sockets of a specific manufacturer so that computer network subscriber sockets are in the same style as other sockets in the room, most manufacturers offer sockets that allow the use of any keystone jack modules.


There are many ways to ensure a connection to a computer network. The obvious advantages of wireless networks mean that we usually use this method of connection. However, the best transmission and stability of the connection are ensured by permanent connections with wires. For this purpose, we use subscriber outlets .

RJ45 subscriber sockets - types

  • surface-mounted sockets - mounted directly on walls or furniture. The cable is usually installed on the surface and inserted from the side inside the socket or inside or on the opposite side of the partition and led directly into the socket (the socket is mounted on the leading opening)
  • flush-mounted sockets - mounted in standard electrical boxes. The cable is installed under the plaster and led to the electrical box
  • keystone modules - standard for installing many types of modules. In most cases, the systems of sockets and switches available on the market make it possible to mount modules of this type
  • floor sockets - are installed in special floor boxes, most often using keystone modules

  • UTP - unshielded socket
  • STP (formerly FTP) - shielded socket enabling the connection of virtually all types of network cables - shielded and unshielded
  • category 5e, 6, 6A, 7 - Defines the network transmission parameters. Subscriber sockets of the same or higher category than other elements of the computer network should be used

Subscriber outlets - application

To the socket we connect patchcord - a cable used to connect devices to the computer network. RJ45 subscriber sockets should be installed wherever there are devices connected to the network, such as: routers, computers (especially stationary), servers, file servers, printers.
