Structured cabling includes a universal system of connections ensuring data transmission in various standards and technologies. LAN standards are most often used to transmit data. Such elements of the computer network include:
- connection and distribution cabinets
- patch panels and sockets
- LAN cables (usually 4 twisted pair or optical fibers)
Designing a structural network - connections
To build a structural network cables of various classes and categories are used. Cables may or may not be shielded. There are many different types of shielding. Patch panels and subscriber sockets are used to terminate the cables. The connection between the socket and the patch panel can be subjected to parameter tests in order to confirm compliance with the assumed category. To connect to active devices, cables of the patchcord are used. Elements of the computer network are placed in special cabinets.
The most commonly used is RACK 19 ”cabinets hanging or standing.
Structured cabling - parameters and standards
To take full advantage of all elements of computer network cabling , all elements of each connection should meet the assumed parameters. Most often, the entire transmission path between active devices looks as follows: patchcord, socket / patchpanel, connecting cable, socket / patchpanel, patchcord. If any of the elements of the computer network is of a lower category than the others, it lowers the parameters of the entire connection. Particular attention should be paid to shielded networks . Using an unshielded component breaks the protection and significantly degrades its performance.
Designing a computer network with different parameters
Structured cabling is most often designed in a star topology adding additional distribution points. Connections with subscriber points are made with a four-pair twisted pair. These connections must not exceed 100 m. Points that can be connected up to 100 m can be brought to one distribution point and then connected by means of switches. If the distances are greater, further distribution points should be designed. A connection longer than 100 m is made by means of optical fibers. Optical fibers are also used to build connections that require particularly high parameters. Fiber optic connections are less prone to interference and much more resistant to data theft.
What is structured cabling used for?
Appropriate arrangement and installation of components creates a passive structure that can be used in various applications.
Structured cabling is most often used to build:
- computer networks
- telecommunications connections
- connections for audio-video transmission
- industrial control
- CCTV closed circuit
- monitoring
- surveillance and access control systems
- fire protection systems
- alarm installations
Types of structured cabling
Depending on the parameters of the components used, there are classes and categories of structured cabling: A, B, C (category 3), D (category 5e), E (category 6), EA (category 6A), F (category 7), FA (category 7A)
The elements of each class and category differ according to the materials used, construction and construction. The higher categories of structured cabling allow transmission at higher speeds. The transmission speed depends not only on the class or category of structured cabling used, but to a large extent on the devices active in the structural network: switches, converters, transmitters, etc.
Structured cabling is governed by international standards:
- American: EIA / TIA-568-A and EIA / TIA-568-B - the most popular and adopted all over the world
- international: ISO / IEC 11801
- European: EN 50173 (EN 50174)
- Polish: PN-EN 50173 (PN-EN 50174)
